Pure Heart. Skillful Hands.

Servant of God

To be a servant of God, there are three things to consider: character, competence and culture. King David was someone who had integrity of heart and competence and who changed an entire culture.

David was anointed privately as a teenager, but there was much to be done before God would call him the apple of His eye. There was much to be done before he would be called a man after God’s own heart.

It is in Psalm 78:70-72 that we find what was to take place. He had two elements or qualities that worked in tandem for him to become the king of Israel.

“He also chose David His servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; from the care of the ewes with suckling lambs. He brought him to shepherd Jacob His people, and Israel His inheritance. So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart and guided them with his skillful hands” (Ps. 78:70-72).

David was a servant of God who said, “Lord is starts with my heart, doesn’t it? If there is anything that You need to do to change my heart, would You? Please do it.”

Creating God’s Culture

The integrity of our hearts and the skills of our hands are our responsibility. The culture is what happens because we have been there. When we leave, what kind of culture do we leave behind? What kind of atmosphere?

The Three C’s

  1. Character
  2. Competence
  3. Culture

These are three areas in which each of us must check to see how we are doing. They include character (the integrity of heart), competence (the skillfulness of hands) and the culture that we leave behind, produce, cultivate or do not cultivate.

Growing Character

Our hope is that we grow in character here at New Hope. That is why serving is so important because we are going to learn some things as we serve that we will never learn in a classroom — people skills, gracious responses, forgiveness and love. We may learn about them in a classroom, but we will never inculcate them. We will never deposit them into our being until we are in the midst of serving.

Developing Competence

We pray that our competence will increase. We want not only our heart to be good, but we want our competence to be good. They work in tandem.

Building the Right Culture

Our goal is that we exude the culture of New Hope in everything that we do; that we are gracious in all our dealings and as we are doing church as a team, we work with one another, not against one another, and that there is a sense of developing emerging leaders all the time. We are going to work with them and build them.

Our youth are just tremendous. We start them young to build all three areas — character, competence and culture. If we are going to be a people who not only have pure hearts, skillful hands and also have the culture, then we have to start early. We have to exude that culture.
